Nigeria records 85% decline in vaccine-derived poliovirus -FG


The Federal Government has said the country has recorded a 85 per cent decline in the Circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio Virus Type 2 cases between 2021 to 2022.

The Chairman of the Expert Review Committee on Polio and Routine Immunisation, Prof Akin Osibogun disclosed this at the 39th meeting of the ERC on Polio and Routine Immunisation held in Abuja on Tuesday.

The World Health Organisation had in its 2021 annual report said Nigeria reported 1,027 cases of cVDPV2 in 2021 due to suboptimal population immunity.

Experts, however, say the cases of cVDPV2 does not threaten the country’s Wild Poliovirus free certification.

The PUNCH had reported that the last case of WPV in the country was reported in Borno State in August 2016 and on August 25, 2020, Nigeria, was certified wild polio-free, culminating in a wild polio-free African region.
