A suspected underground gas explosion has left one person dead and 41 others injured in South Africa, authorities and emergency services said on Thursday.
The explosion, which happened on Wednesday according to news reports, ripped open roads and flipped vehicles in the heart of South Africa’s capital city, Johannesburg.
The cause of the blast remains unclear. However, the government of South Africa said it is being investigated urging members of the public to use alternative routes, allowing space for the relevant authorities to complete their work on the scene.
Aljazeera reported that the company that supplies gas to that part of the city said it did not believe its underground pipelines were responsible, as authorities first thought.
