AI weapons pose ‘unfathomable risk’ with ‘freedom to kill’ humans indiscriminately

AI weapons should be banned as they are an “unfathomable risk” to our species if given the “freedom to kill”, an expert has claimed.

They could turn against human operators and kill civilians indiscriminately, according to warnings.

In a bombshell dossier to a House of Lords committee, an expert contributor granted anonymity said the “breathtaking” speed of AI tech posed a threat to human life.

The use of AI in the defence “presents significant dangers to the future of human security and is immoral”, the witness said.

The Lords’ AI in Weapon Systems Committee is holding an inquiry into how autonomous weapons should be developed, used and regulated by the UK.

The expert said: “Under no circumstances should thinking machines, whose power is barely understood, be integrated into the defence of the realm or given the freedom to kill.“

AI may well be the greatest threat we face as a species.”
