Our attention has been drawn to a misleading report in some Nigerian national dailies and online newspapers, particularly Sahara Reporters. The press report titled “Group Calls For Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister’s Resignation Over Poor Handling Of Envoys’ Recall, Implications On Students’ Scholarships, Others” was released under the banner of Mandate for National Values and Integrity in Nigeria (MNVIN), a faceless group well-known for providing pay-as-you-go hatchet services for desperate and unpatriotic elements.
The hatchet job’s resource person and sponsors have been identified upon further investigation. The recalcitrant group is being led by Ambassador Nwannebuike Eze Ominyi, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Zambia, instigating a few unpatriotic Ambassadors fighting tooth and nail to remain at their foreign posts against the Nigerian Government’s directive. Ominyi has resorted to smearing the Foreign Affairs Ministry (@NigeriaMFA) and the Renewed Hope Government (@NigeriaGov) headed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. These disgruntled elements would instead bring down the country rather than vacate their present foreign missions!
While we respect the freedom of the press and their commitment to delivering accurate information, clarifying specific points raised in the erroneous article is essential.
The Ominyi-instigated report presented a series of allegations against Honourable Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar (@YusufTuggar) and President Tinubu’s (@NGRPresident @officialABAT) recall of Nigerian ambassadors and high commissioners. However, upon closer examination, these claims fail to provide a compelling case for the Minister’s resignation or suggest that the recall process is inherently flawed.
Lack of Concrete Evidence.
The grouse of Ominyi and the article’s primary argument hinges on the notion that HM Tuggar’s handling of the recall demonstrates incompetence and warrants his resignation. However, this claim needs to be backed by concrete evidence. Instead, the article relies on vague generalisations and unsubstantiated assertions, such as labelling the recall process as “unplanned, hasty, and clumsy” without providing specific examples of these shortcomings.
Misrepresentation of Procedures.
The article’s accusation that HM Tuggar is mismanaging simple diplomatic procedures is also questionable. In reality, the recall of ambassadors is a standard practice in international diplomacy, often done to refresh the diplomatic corps, bring in new perspectives, or respond to changing political circumstances, especially with the new drive to implement the Renewed Hope agenda. There is no indication in the article or from other sources that President Tinubu or HM Tuggar is deviating from established protocols or handling the recall unorthodoxly.
Unfounded Allegations of Mess and Embarrassment.
The report’s assertion that the recall is causing a “messy process” and a “national embarrassment” is equally lacking in substance. Instead, Ominyi and his cohorts are the elements compounding a simple directive and tarnishing the image of our great country, Nigeria, in the international space. The article needs to provide specific examples of these problems beyond making sweeping statements that lack credibility. While sometimes accompanied by challenges, the recall of ambassadors is typically handled discreetly and without causing undue disruption or embarrassment to the nation.
Unproven Claims of Unpaid Allowances.
The allegation that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs withholds passage allowances from the ambassadors is also unsupported by evidence. The article’s primary source is a memo from the ministry stating that it is “working assiduously” to pay the allowances. This suggests that the ministry is taking the matter seriously and is making efforts to resolve the issue. Ominyi, an experienced Ambassador, should be well versed in international financial transactions and protocols, especially as the Renewed Hope administration is processing transfers to over 150 foreign missions. Surprisingly, this diplomat-turned-Zambian-baggage and his goons that have fed fat on Nigeria’s commonwealth would instead constitute themselves in an international nuisance and sling mud towards their fatherland.
Additionally, it is crucial to understand that diplomatic decisions are often made based on broader national interests, and factors beyond immediate financial constraints may influence the Minister’s adherence to the specified timeline.
Overstated Impact on Education.
The article’s concern about the impact of the recall on the education of the Ambassadors’ children is understandable, but it fails to provide any specific evidence of problems. Most of the Ambassadors have taken necessary steps and shown appreciation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the due care of their wards, especially steps to minimise the impact -if any, indicating that they are aware of the potential impact and are taking steps to minimise it and helping Ambassadors’ families on a family-by-family basis, as the needs differ.
Unsubstantiated Claims of Diplomatic Fallout.
The article’s assertion that the recall harms Nigeria’s business and diplomatic affairs is also based on speculation and needs concrete evidence. The article’s primary source is a statement from the Romanian President expressing surprise and disappointment at the recall, but this does not reflect the views of the Nigerian Government or the ambassadors themselves. Moreover, the recall of ambassadors is a familiar phenomenon and is not likely to have a negative short or long-term impact on Nigeria’s diplomatic relations. Nigeria is a sovereign country headed by a people-oriented President who is working around the clock to ensure Nigeria and Nigerians are the priority, thus determined to drive Nigeria’s interest at home and abroad. It is imbecilic for a Nigerian Ambassador to side with another country’s interest against Nigeria.
To avoid any doubt, it is crucial to consider the multiple factors that contribute to the scheduling of diplomatic engagements, and attributing such decisions solely to the Honourable Minister may oversimplify a complex situation.
Role of the Media.
We appreciate the role of the media in holding public figures accountable, but we also believe in the importance of providing a balanced and nuanced perspective on complex matters. It is general knowledge that the Foreign Affairs Ministry has a responsive and customer-focused helpdesk (foreignaffairs.gov.ng/citizens-helpd) that welcomes inquiries and requests from the Nigerian public. Interested parties can make contact for independent and verifiable information that may contribute to a more accurate understanding of the situation.
Conclusively, Ominyi’s accusations, including allegations from goons hiding behind him to throw stones of calumny at HM Yusuf Maitama Tuggar on the recall of the Ambassadors, are based on unsubstantiated claims, speculation, and a lack of understanding of standard diplomatic practices. Ominyi and his ilk failed to provide concrete evidence to support their allegations and instead relied on vague generalisations and emotionally charged language. The recall of ambassadors, while sometimes challenging, is a common practice in international diplomacy and should not be misrepresented as a sign of incompetence or national embarrassment.
