Raphael Varane has had a private falling out with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, reports the Daily Mail.
Things appeared to be rosy following Varane’s switch to Old Trafford as he excelled in his very first season. It’s a different story now though, with Varane and Ten Hag reportedly having a major disagreement over his absence in the Manchester derby.
The Frenchman formed a strong partnership with Lisandro Martinez but since Licha is injured – and a series of events affecting Varane’s game time – here’s a look at how things unravelled.
October 7. Ten Hag confirms Varane has another injury setback
October 19. Varane resumes training, expected to start games. Meanwhile, Maguire’s strong performances at centre-back prompt fans to want to see more from him.
October 29. He’s benched for the all-important Manchester derby, raising eyebrows as Jonny Evans started alongside Maguire. The Red Devils lost 3-0.
November 3. Reports emerge of Varane missing training because he’s ‘not happy’ despite assumptions he was injured again.
November 11. Ten Hag makes a public declaration that he prefers to play Maguire with either Victor Lindelof or Jonny Evans purely due to tactical reasons.
November 23. Amid rumours of a January transfer on the rise, a fresh report states Varane ‘wants’ to play regular football and doesn’t wish to be a bit-part player.
November 23. Ten Hag makes another public statement, urging Varane to fight like Maguire and reclaim his spot.
Considering how brutally Ten Hag dealt with cases like Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho – players he had issues with – Varane looks set to be the next one out the door.
