North East: Climate change, environment degradation region’s major issues – Govs

The Governors of the northeastern states of Nigeria concluded their meeting at the 9th Northeast Governor Forum in Yola today, highlighting climate change and environmental degradation as significant challenges in the region.

Acknowledging these issues, the Forum resolved to enhance collaboration with initiatives like the Great Green Wall and the Global Initiative of Carbon Credit financing to address climate change and environmental degradation effectively.

Additionally, the Governors committed to partnering with Shanghai Electric to establish either a 60 MW Coal Power Plant or a 50 MW Solar Power Plant in each state within the region as part of their resolution.

Reading the communique on behalf of his colleagues after a closed-door session of the 9th regional meeting of the Governors, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State said the power plant would help to mitigate the poor energy situation in the region.

Adding that the forum notes the poor rail system in the zone and therefore called for inclusion of the region into the National Railway Transport Plan.

The Governors appreciated the readiness of the Bauchi State government to host the North East Regional Trade Fair between 26th February – 3rd March 2024 and called on all the subnational entities within the region to actively…
