In 2022, aviation ticket prices surged by 95.01% due to aviation fuel scarcity, with November 2023 seeing an 11.01% increase to ₦81,334.05. Aviation fuel prices skyrocketed from ₦250 to ₦1,530 per litre within two months.
Air Peace tickets from Lagos to Abuja rose from ₦55,000 to ₦162,000. United Nigeria Airlines COO Osita Okonkwo attributed the hike to forex rates and increased airport charges, citing Asaba airport’s extra fees of up to ₦500,000 per hour past 7 pm.
Okonkwo expressed concerns about breaking even amid rising costs and emphasized the industry’s dependence on dollars.
