Power cutoff leaves corpses rotting in debtmortuaries over N42bn debt

▪ Corpses in Nigerian Army barracks’ mortuaries are decomposing due to power outage, as disclosed by Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja.

▪ Lagbaja visited Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, seeking intervention amid a 10-day notice given by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to pay off debts.

▪The debts owed by the Army are loaded onto meters, hindering the restoration of power despite attempts to recharge them.

▪ Lagbaja emphasized the urgent need for the government’s intervention, citing a similar liquidation of debt in 2005.

▪ He assured the Minister of the Army’s support in intelligence strategies to combat electricity infrastructure vandalism.

▪ Adelabu pledged to engage with DisCos to resolve the issue, considering restructuring debt payments or seeking regular payment assurances from the Army.

▪ The Minister highlighted various challenges in the power sector beyond debts, including infrastructure vandalism, billing inefficiency, and gas supply shortages.

▪ He suggested exploring collaboration with development partners to install alternative power sources like Solar PVs and Battery Energy Storage System(BESS) in Army barracks.

▪ The meeting aimed to address the repercussions of power outages in army formations and find solutions moving forward.
