Armed security forces disrupt hunger protest gathering

Security forces in Uvwie, Delta State, significantly heightened their presence at the DSC and Effurun roundabouts to thwart a planned protest denouncing hunger and hardship in Nigeria. The demonstration, slated to commence at 6 am in Uvwie and Effurun local government areas, faced a preemptive response from authorities.

During the security crackdown, journalist Dele Fasan, serving as Galaxy Television’s South South Bureau Chief, allegedly encountered mistreatment at the hands of security personnel believed to be affiliated with Effurun barracks of the Nigerian army. Fasan, visibly shaken by the incident, later expressed gratitude for his survival after experiencing dehumanizing treatment, including the restraint of his hands in front of him.

Despite the protest not yet underway, Fasan recounted being targeted while directing his cameraman to document the roads. He emphasized his confusion regarding the aggression he faced as a journalist fulfilling his duties.

Following his release, Fasan acknowledged the intervention of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, DCP Aina Adesola, and received an apology from a senior military officer. The incident sparked concern among civil society members, prompting their presence to mitigate potential escalation and prevent any loss of life.

Even after Fasan’s release, heavy security patrols persisted around the DSC and Effurun roundabouts, as well as major thoroughfares in Warri and Uvwie. Remarkably, traffic flow remained unaffected along the busy DSC to Effurun roundabout route, indicating effective management of the situation by security forces.

The deployment of security personnel began as early as 5 am, strategically stationed to proactively deter the protest before it could materialize, reflecting authorities’ proactive stance on maintaining public order and security.
