ECOWAS removes economic, travel sanctions imposed on Niger, others

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has lifted economic sanctions on Niger, Mali, and Burkina-Faso, effective immediately.

The decision followed an extraordinary summit held at the State House, Abuja, where the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government deliberated on regional political, peace, and security issues.

President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Touray, announced the resolutions, which included lifting the closure of borders, no-fly zones, freezing financial transactions, and travel bans.

The decision aims to address humanitarian concerns, particularly during Ramadan, and invites the withdrawing member states to reconsider their decision, highlighting the benefits for their citizens.
