The Federal Government has made an appeal to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to defer its scheduled nationwide protest slated for February 27 and 28, 2024.
Speaking after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday, Minister of Information, Muhammad Idris, stated that the government had addressed nearly all the demands presented by the labour union.
In contrast, the NLC has maintained its stance, threatening to halt services across the nation if its members face attacks during the planned two-day protest commencing on Tuesday. NLC President, Joe Ajaero, reiterated that the industrial action would proceed as planned.
The NLC emphasized that the Federal Government must take decisive actions to fulfill its commitments to Organized Labour and tackle the escalating economic challenges confronting Nigeria. The country is grappling with surging inflation, food prices, foreign exchange crisis, economic distress, and soaring living costs, exacerbated by the removal of petrol subsidies, prompting protests in various regions.
Despite governmental pressure urging the group to reconsider the strike, the NLC affirmed its determination not to abandon the proposed nationwide protest.
“We demand food security, safety, and dignity for all citizens, free from suffocating IMF/World Bank economic policies,” the NLC asserted.
