In a recent interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, shed light on the current discourse surrounding lawmakers’ salaries. He emphasized that the existing remuneration is insufficient to support the responsibilities entrusted to federal legislators.
Contrary to public perception, Kalu clarified that the salary component of lawmakers’ compensation is modest and distinct from allowances earmarked for constituency-related duties. He underscored the importance of understanding this distinction, noting that allowances are strictly regulated and mismanagement could lead to sanctions.
Addressing calls for a 50% reduction in salaries, Kalu expressed skepticism about its efficacy in addressing the core issue. He highlighted the disconnect between lawmakers’ earnings and the economic realities of Nigeria, stressing that even drastic cuts would not align with prevailing economic conditions.
Kalu further emphasized that the current economic climate, marked by high inflation rates, renders lawmakers’ salaries inadequate for effectively carrying out their duties in their respective constituencies.
