The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has decided to suspend its planned protest scheduled for Wednesday, citing “overwhelming success on day one” of the protest. However, the nationwide action will continue with simultaneous press conferences across all states, as announced by the state councils of the Congress and the National Headquarters.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the President, Joe Ajaero, and Acting General Secretary, Ismail Bello, the NLC has given the Federal Government a fresh 14-day ultimatum, ending on March 13. This ultimatum urges for the full implementation of all agreements reached on October 2, 2023, along with other demands highlighted in the letter presented during Tuesday’s nationwide protest.
The protest, which aimed to address the escalating hardship and insecurity in the nation, saw participation from workers, civil society affiliates, and state councils across the country. Despite the widespread protests, official activities remained largely unaffected as civil servants, banks, and other enterprises continued with their operations.
The NLC’s decision to suspend the protest underscores its commitment to engaging with the government while emphasizing the urgency of addressing the pressing issues facing the nation. With the fresh ultimatum in place, the NLC remains vigilant in ensuring that the concerns of Nigerian workers and citizens are adequately addressed by the authorities.
