Soyinka to Government: Nigeria informally breaking up, you’re taking us for a ride

Renowned scholar and Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has sounded the alarm, cautioning Nigerian leaders about the country’s informal disintegration.

Speaking at The Punch 50th anniversary lecture themed ‘Recovering the Narrative,’ Professor Soyinka urged government officials at all levels to refrain from underestimating the intelligence of citizens.

He emphasized the urgent need for the government to reconnect with the people, stating, “It’s about time leaders stopped taking us for a ride so that the government can come close to the people.”

Expressing concern over the current state of affairs, Soyinka remarked, “We don’t want the nation to break, the nation is breaking informally. Let nations die so that humanity may live.”

He criticized politicians for their inconsistent stance on crucial issues such as restructuring and reconstruction, stressing the importance of addressing these matters promptly.

“It is time to look into it because it is not just a slogan,” he added.

Soyinka’s remarks underscore the pressing need for proactive measures to address the underlying challenges facing Nigeria’s unity and governance.”
