Tinubu’s aide criticizes Peter Obi for supporting “Yahoo boys”

Bayo Onanuga, a media aide to President Bola Tinubu, has engaged in a verbal dispute with Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election. The disagreement stems from Obi’s criticism of the government’s focus on combating internet fraud among youth while alleged embezzlement persists in government ministries and agencies.

Taking to his social media page, Onanuga shared a video featuring the former governor of Anambra state expressing his opinion on the government’s priorities. Obi questioned the emphasis on pursuing young individuals involved in internet fraud, known as “Yahoo Yahoo,” when significant financial misconduct occurs within the government.

In the video, Obi asserted, “We are chasing young boys with computers and say they are yahoo yahoo people when people are stealing the billions which we have as a government. Why are we wasting our time? Why are we doing that? Why are we chasing young men all over the place? I can assure you that all the money that the yahoo yahoo people have stolen in one year is not up to the amount of the money that is being stolen in government in one day.”

The rift between Obi and Tinubu’s government escalated after Obi lost his appeal against the president’s victory in the 2023 election. Onanuga, while sharing the video in a tweet, cautioned the Labour Party leader against using a contentious tone to make his case.
