Senator Emmanuel Udende representing Benue North-East has revealed that suspected gunmen have brutally taken the lives of approximately 50 individuals in communities within his senatorial district.
Speaking passionately on the floor of the legislative chamber, Udende disclosed that the attackers, posing as herders, launched deadly assaults on communities situated in Logo and Katsina-Ala Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
Udende, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed deep concern over the relentless attacks on these communities, which have persisted unabated until recent days.
He stated, “Not fewer than 50 persons have been killed in fresh attacks on several communities in Logo, Katsina-Ala LGAs of Benue state by terrorists parading as herdsmen.”
Highlighting the grim situation, Udende emphasized the harrowing toll these attacks have taken on the affected villages, with residents being targeted daily by heavily armed terrorists.
In a bid to address the escalating crisis, Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South, urged the compliance committee of the upper legislative chamber to ensure the implementation of the resolutions passed by the Senate.
Moro underscored the urgent need for proactive measures, stating, “I think the time has come… We need to be proactive on this matter.”
The Senate previously established an ad hoc committee to review the security architecture, but Moro lamented that the recommendations from this review were not acted upon.
The discussion in the chamber culminated in a resolution urging security agencies to deploy additional personnel to address the ongoing attacks. Additionally, the leadership of the National Assembly was tasked with meeting President Muhammadu Buhari to present reports and recommendations from both the eighth and ninth Senate regarding security concerns.
