Minister warns DisCos of license revocation over outages

In a significant development, the Federal Government has announced stringent measures to hold Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) accountable for the ongoing issues with power supply across the nation. Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu delivered a stern warning yesterday, indicating that DisCos could face severe consequences, including the revocation of their licenses, if they fail to address the persistent challenges.

Adelabu emphasized a firm commitment to ensuring accountability among all distribution companies, asserting that deliberate negligence would not be tolerated. He underscored the gravity of the situation by highlighting the potential repercussions for non-compliance.

The minister’s statement came amid growing concerns over the erratic electricity supply experienced nationwide in recent months. Adelabu has called for an emergency meeting with key stakeholders, including the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), to address the pressing issues at hand.

Various factors have been cited for the ongoing power outages, including inadequate gas supply, grid failures, reduced output from Generating Companies (GenCos), as well as challenges related to the distribution process and acts of sabotage.

Adelabu’s expressed concerns extend beyond the immediate challenges to encompass the overall performance of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), highlighting the need for comprehensive reforms to address systemic issues.

The government’s firm stance underscores a renewed commitment to resolving the longstanding issues plaguing the electricity sector and ensuring reliable power supply for all citizens. This proactive approach signals a pivotal moment in the government’s efforts to tackle one of the country’s most pressing infrastructural challenges.
