States stand firm against labour’s minimum wage demands

States yesterday pushed back against Labour’s minimum wage demands, deeming them unattainable.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) advocates for N709,000, while the Trade Union Congress (TUC) suggests N447,000 as the new baseline wage.

However, states are offering between N45,000 and N70,000. NLC and TUC chapters in the Northeast suggest a monthly minimum of N560,000, Southeast proposes N540,000, Southwest suggests N794,000, and Southsouth zones propose at least N850,000. Northwest Labor proposes N485,000 monthly.

These proposals were tabled during discussions held in six cities across the country’s geopolitical zones.

The current minimum wage, implemented in April 2019, stands at N30,000.
