Former President Muhammadu Buhari has lauded President Bola Tinubu for his commendable performance in office despite the challenging economic conditions experienced by Nigerians nationwide.
Buhari acknowledged the complexity of Nigeria’s situation, stating that there are limited solutions for the country’s current challenges. He expressed his appreciation for Tinubu’s efforts since assuming office, highlighting the tough nature of governing Nigeria.
The economic challenges escalated after Buhari’s departure on May 29, 2023. Tinubu, upon inauguration, announced the end of fuel subsidies, leading to a significant increase in the price of the Premium Motor Spirit from N185 to over N600. Additionally, the financial sector underwent reforms, causing the naira to experience a continuous decline against the dollar.
The floating of the currency resulted in the naira’s instability in the market, with exchange rates ranging between N1,400 and N1,900. The economic hardships triggered widespread protests across the country, organized by Nigerians and labor unions, expressing discontent with the deteriorating circumstances that have pushed more people below the poverty line.l
During a meeting with the Nigeria Customs Service management team in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari urged Nigerians to endure the economic challenges and support the policies and programs implemented by the current administration. Despite the difficulties, he expressed gratitude for Tinubu’s performance, emphasizing the complexity of governing Nigeria.
