Protesters Rampage at Wuse Market: Hawker’s Death Sparks Unrest
Protesters launched a violent assault on a police station and ignited several cars at the bustling Wuse Market in Abuja on Tuesday, following the fatal shooting of a hawker by security operatives.
Eyewitnesses recounted that 27-year-old Ibrahim Yahaya was shot dead after being apprehended by “task force officers” and the police while attempting to flee custody, as stated by authorities.
Shop owners, who claim to have witnessed the incident, asserted that the hawker was attempting to evade detention when he was fatally shot.
The killing incited fury among some youths in the market, prompting them to converge on the police station. There, they shattered windows and set numerous cars ablaze in the vicinity, resulting in the destruction of approximately eight vehicles in the tumult that erupted around 3:30 p.m.
Reports indicate that the police responded by dispersing the mob with teargas, as recounted by witnesses.
Amidst the chaos, approximately ten shops were engulfed in flames, adding to the turmoil gripping the area.
