At the annual Ramadan public lecture at the Lagos Central Mosque, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of prayer and patience in navigating Nigeria’s current economic difficulties.
Speaking at the event, which centered on the theme “The Current Economic Situation: Solution from Islamic Perspective,” Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy Obafemi Hamzat, called on leaders to devise policies that would bolster the nation’s economy.
He urged citizens to refrain from negativity and toxicity, advocating instead for unity and collective prayer to bring about positive change. Acknowledging the challenges associated with subsidy removal, the governor underscored the need for perseverance and focus during this transitional period.
While affirming the government’s commitment to steering the nation in the right direction, Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged that tough times may lie ahead before improvements are realized. He called for divine guidance and strength for leaders to navigate the country through its current predicament.
The guest lecturer, Sheikh Mujitaba Giwa, echoed the sentiment of patience and prayerfulness, attributing the economic downturn to divine tests faced by nations. He emphasized the need for truthfulness and the avoidance of ungodly acts, citing societal vices such as cross-dressing and rampant violence.
Sheikh Giwa also advocated for decentralization in the management of mineral resources, suggesting that states should have more autonomy in resource management to stimulate economic growth and development.
In essence, the call for prayer, patience, and unity resonated throughout the event as essential pillars in overcoming Nigeria’s economic challenges.
