Fuji music icon Adewale Ayuba shared his journey to the U.S. in an interview with Teju Babyface. In 1995, Ayuba’s three-month tour turned into an exile due to political unrest under Sani Abacha.
After releasing an album advocating for the release of political detainees, including Moshood Abiola, Ayuba received a warning to stay in America.
He returned to Nigeria in 1998 after Abacha’s death. During his U.S. stay, Ayuba enrolled in school, met his wife, and became a U.S. citizen. He described the experience as building a new foundation in America despite the challenges.
