A tragic accident has struck the community of Kauru Local Government Area in Kaduna State, Nigeria, where six students drowned in the Mbang River. The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 26, 2024, while the students were returning home after writing their Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination (JSSCE) organized by the West African Junior School Examination (WAEC).
According to reports, the students, who attended the Government Secondary School Fadan Chawai, were attempting to cross the river when the tragic incident occurred. While five of the students managed to survive, six students, aged between 15 and 19, tragically drowned.
The names of the deceased students have been identified as Manasseh Monday, Musa John, Pius David, Monday Ayuba, David Danlami, and Yahuza Audu. Local authorities and community members have been searching for the remaining bodies and mourning the loss of these young lives.

NAN reports that the incident occurred on Tuesday evening while the students were returning home after writing their Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination (JSSCE) exams.
The victims are Manasseh Monday, 16; Musa John, 16; Pius David, 15; Monday Ayuba, 16; David Danlami, 19; and Yahuza Audu, 16.
Ishaya Chingali, a community leader in Chawai and vice president of the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), said 11 students entered the river linking the Ribang community and Fadan Chawai.
“Six of them drowned, five survived,” Chingali said.
Chingali said four bodies have so far been recovered while the search for the remaining two was still ongoing.
“They tried to cross the river to the other side like they have done several times. Six drowned in the process,” he said.
