Following the Supreme Court’s ruling against federal allocation to local governments managed by caretaker committees, at least 13 states have scheduled local government elections. These states include Kaduna, Kogi, Bauchi, Katsina, Osun, Enugu, Benue, Rivers, Jigawa, Imo, Kebbi, Abia, and Anambra. The Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission has set its council poll for October 19, 2024.
The Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional for state governors to control funds allocated to local government councils. Justice Emmanuel Agim, delivering the judgment, emphasized that the 774 local government councils in Nigeria should manage their funds independently. The judgment arose from a suit filed by the Attorney-General of the Federation against the 36 state governors, asserting the separation of federal, state, and local governments.
In line with the Supreme Court’s decision, several states have announced their election dates and commenced preparations. For example, the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission also scheduled its local government election for October 19, 2024, ensuring a transparent electoral process. Meanwhile, Bauchi State has planned its elections for August 19, with arrangements in place for a fair and credible election.
However, preparations in Ondo State have been halted due to non-compliance with election guidelines by political parties. The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission has postponed the council elections, previously rescheduled multiple times, citing the lack of nominations and adherence to procedures by political parties. This postponement reflects ongoing challenges in ensuring democratic processes at the local government level across various states.
