In a surprising turn of events, former German national team coach Joachim Low has reportedly expressed interest in the vacant England manager position, according to The Sun. Low, who led Germany to World Cup glory in Brazil in 2014 and managed the team for 15 years, is said to be open to talks with the Football Association (FA) following Gareth Southgate’s resignation.
With several high-profile candidates such as Eddie Howe, Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, and Jurgen Klopp being linked to the job, it seems that Low’s name has now entered the mix. However, it is believed that both Tuchel and Klopp are not realistic prospects at this stage.
Low’s last game as German boss was the 2-0 defeat to Southgate’s England at Wembley in the last 16 at Euro 2020. Since then, the former Stuttgart and Fenerbahce manager has not taken up any managerial roles.
While Southgate earned £5million-a-year managing England, Low banked just half of that amount in his final contract with the German FA.
Klopp earned £15m-a-season at Liverpool and any wage like that would make it impossible for the FA to make a move.
It remains to be seen whether Low’s interest in the England job will materialize into a concrete offer, but his wealth of experience and success at the international level could make him a strong contender for the position.
