A yet-to-be-identified woman has committed suicide by jumping into a well in the Bariga area of Lagos.
A source told FIJ that the deceased jumped into a well outside her compound on Thursday.
“I don’t know what could have led to her actions, but she jumped into the well today at Kusa Street in Ladilak, Bariaga,” she told FIJ.
She said that not quite long after the incident, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) was at the scene to evacuate the body.
The area is still crowded with people murmuring, the source said.
While the reason for her actions might be unknown, there’s been a spike in suicide recently. Over the last two years, at least 70 Nigerians have taken their own lives due to the country’s worsening economic condition.
A 2023 report stated that in Nigeria, the suicide rate was 6.9 per 100,000 population in 2019, across both sexes. However, male suicide rates were higher, at 10.1 per 100,000 people.
