EFCC disappears from X

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s official X handle has disappeared from the microblogging platform.

FIJ noticed on Tuesday afternoon that the account had ceased to exist online for about an hour.

“This account doesn’t exist,” X responded to all devices trying to access @officialEFCC on Tuesday.

FIJ called Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesperson, on Tuesday and he confirmed the incident.

“Are you sure? Let me find out from our Information and Technology unit,” Oyewale said first.

“It is just a network issue. Our IT people are attending to it and it would be back up soon.”

According to X, users may deactivate their accounts leading to the disappearance of the handle.

X may choose to confirm if the user deactivated the account permanently or temporarily.

“Account owners have the ability to deactivate their account at any time. When an account owner deactivates their account, the page will be rendered as unavailable,” X explains.

An account could also cease to exist if X grants the handle a permanent suspension.

Accounts disappearing from X is not a new occurrence, but it could be a more complicated task for an agency’s IT team to fix in minutes.

In April 2023, prominent sports blog SB Nation disappeared from X. SB Nation’s X account had over 300,000 followers at the time. Nobody at X could fix the problem within a week.

The microblogging company told the SB Nation group that there was “a bug that the team is working through in order to reinstate the account.”
