Pep Guardiola ‘approves’ Manchester City shock transfer

Manchester City are working on a deal to bring Ilkay Gundogan back to the Etihad from Barcelona, with the German midfielder ready to return to the Premier League after just one season in Spain.

Fabrizio Romano reported earlier today (August 20) that negotiations between Gundogan and City began yesterday. His latest update confirms that Barcelona are “100%” willing to let the 33-year-old leave for free, with the move only requiring Gundogan’s approval. Pep Guardiola has already given the go-ahead to reunite with his former player.

Gundogan was Guardiola’s first signing at City in June 2016, and over their seven years together, he played 188 league games, becoming a key figure in Guardiola’s system.

One of his most memorable moments came in the 2021/22 season when, on the final day, City were trailing 2-0 to Aston Villa. A defeat would have handed the title to Liverpool.
