The House of Representatives member for Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency of Benue State, Terseer Ugbor, has said Nigeria does not earn from tourism and wildlife tourism.
Terseer Ugbor said Nigeria needs strong legislation to protect wildlife if she must earn from the wildlife sector.
In an interview with Arise TV on Thursday, Ugbor noted elephant tusks cost $100,000 in the international market, but the law only recommended ₦10,000 fine for poachers.
He stated that law enforcement officers also aid and abet poachers to carry out their trafficking of wildlife.
“Legislation is everything. Conservation efforts have to depend on stronger penalties and stronger laws to deter poachers, to deter traffickers from engaging in this business. Several years ago in Nigeria, there was a case where an elephant was killed in Nigeria. And the people who committed this illegal activity were arrested, but they were never persecuted.
