A trending video on X has shown the poor quality uncooked rice donated to victims displaced by the Maiduguri flood in Borno State.
The thirty-seven-second clip, which has been shared by so many accounts on X, captures a resident stating that the rice smells bad, has worms in it, and is soaked with water.
According to the speakers in the video, they didn’t get the rice when it was fresh; rather, it was distributed to them after it had gone bad.
“Just look at the rice that was brought to us; this is what we will eat, for God’s sake. See what was brought to us,” a female speaker says in the clip.
“See the rice, please, smelly and worm-infested. There is nothing you will not see. After, they will say on television that they are taking care of us,” a male speaker added.
FIJ found that this video was originally shared on Instagram by Aishabarno on Tuesday, with the caption, Send in your Rice and super Getip (Spegeti) videos. Sadakallahul Azim, which translates to: “Send in your rice and spaghetti (Getip) videos. Sadakallahul Azim.”
In the video, pairs of hands worked through the uncooked rice. The uncooked grains had formed clumps, and some had traces of green algae.
FIJ could not ascertain at press time which of the several donors gave this to the victims displaced by the flood, as on Saturday, Abubakar Kyari, the minister of Agriculture and Food Security, announced that President Bola Tinubu was donating 100 trailers of milled rice, 50 trailers of maize, 30 trailers of sorghum, and 20 trailers of millet to Borno residents affected by the flood.
Also, according to a report published by Daily Trust on September 19, about five agencies and individuals donated more food items including rice, macaroni, spaghetti and vegetable oil to the residents.
These agencies and individuals are the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Nasarawa State Government, Aminu Jaji, a member of the House of Representatives and the National Agency for the Great Green Wall.
About 414,00 Borno residents have been reported displaced following the September 10 incident.
FIJ reported how the federal government had budgeted N762 million to repair Alau Dam in 12 years before it collapsed and released excess water volumes which flooded Maiduguri and other parts of Borno.
Aishabarno had not responded to FIJ’s message on Instagram regarding the video and those affected at press time.
