Famous Greek singer, Marinella suffered a stroke mid-performance on Wednesday night during a concert at Athens’ Herod Atticus Theatre.

The 86-year-old songstress lost her balance and collapsed during her third song on stage.

The concert, which was also set to feature Greek singer Antonis Remos, was immediately cancelled.

A statement released by Hygeia Hospital on Thursday, stated that “Marinella is currently being treated in the intensive care unit for severe brain bleeding”.

Born Kyriaki Papadopoulou in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki in May 1938, she adopted her stage name early in her career, which began in earnest in the mid-1950s in her home town.

Marinella’s career has spanned over six decades.

A household name for generations of Greeks, Marinella has continued to have a commanding stage presence well into her 80s in a career that has spanned more than six decades.

The youngest of four children, it became clear from an early age that she was destined for the stage.
