Nigerians in the United Kingdom are mourning the loss of Mrs. Olubunmi Okeniyi, who passed away just weeks after relocating to the UK with her two children to join her husband.
She died on Sunday, October 13, 2024, nearly a month after their arrival in Sunderland on September 16.
This tragic event has raised concerns within the Nigerian community regarding the well-being of those relocating to the UK.
Many members have expressed their grief over the increasing number of deaths among compatriots shortly after arriving in the country. Two Nigerians had suffered similar fate earlier.
Community members in a message announcing her passing sought financial assistance through a GoFundMe campaign to help cover burial expenses.
It reads, “With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Mrs. Olubunmi Okeniyi, who tragically passed away on 13/10/24, at 4:30 PM in Sunderland, UK. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Jacob Okeniyi, and we urgently seek donations to support her immediate burial, as her husband cannot afford the costs. Any contribution, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated during this difficult time.”
Godwin Ejeh, a community member, reported that the 49-year-old woman had been suffering from breast cancer before moving to the UK. Upon arrival, she began treatment, but doctors indicated that her prognosis was poor and recommended palliative care. Due to their circumstances, this care was administered at home with visiting medical professionals.
On the day of her passing, Mrs. Okeniyi requested assistance to use the restroom.
