New Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is set to hold talks with Darren Fletcher on Tuesday after arriving at the club’s Carrington training complex.
Amorim has been stamping his mark on the club after jetting into Manchester this week, opting to exclude Ruud van Nistelrooy from his coaching set-up after the Dutchman guided the team to three wins from four during his stint as interim boss.
Ruben Amorim angers Man Utd fans by keeping coach despite Ruud van Nistelrooy axe
However, he has opted to keep Fletcher in his position as first team coach – angering some United fans who questioned why Van Nistelrooy couldn’t have been offered a role in some capacity after his impressive work with the team.
Sky Sports have reported that Amorim is set to have meetings with a number of figures at United, including Fletcher, who was the club’s technical director before being replaced by Jason Wilcox earlier this year.
United opted to keep Fletcher involved in the first team coaching group and he began working with the players as a member of staff under both Erik ten Hag and Van Nistelrooy.
Fletcher will not be available for Amorim’s first batch of games, however, after being given a three-match ban for confronting match officials during United’s 2-1 win over Brentford last month – protesting after Brentford scored the opening goal.
The Scot is a legend at United after playing 342 games for the Red Devils during a career that started aged just 11, yet some supporters have still taken issue with Fletcher remaining in his role instead of Van Nistelrooy.
One said: “Jesus Christ. How does he keep surviving”. Another added: “How’s he survived another manager, should have kept Ruud over him”. A third said: “Terminate Ruud but keep Fletcher….”
