Health warning: Using urine, milk for eye treatment could lead to blindness

Dr. Zainab Akinbode, a renowned ophthalmologist, has issued a stern warning to the residents of Ondo State to stop using urine and milk as remedies for eye defects. Speaking during a two-day free healthcare outreach organized by the Philips Diagnostic Centre in Akure, Dr. Akinbode highlighted the growing danger of this traditional practice, which has resulted in irreversible blindness for many individuals.

The ophthalmologist expressed concern over the increasing number of people turning to these unorthodox treatments, despite the risks involved. “Recent findings revealed that many patients who came in for check-ups already had severe eye damage due to the use of these traditional medications,” Dr. Akinbode explained.

She emphasized that such practices, which have long been part of local traditions, are causing lasting harm and advised residents to seek professional medical care for their eye health. The outreach, aimed at raising awareness and providing free eye exams, underscored the need for proper medical treatment to prevent irreversible damage to vision.

“As an ophthalmologist, we see a lot of patients using traditional eye medication on their eyes with things like nursing mothers putting breast milk on their children’s eyes, people putting urine, onions, leaves, sugar water, and all sorts of things.
