A yet-to-be-identified driver of a mini bus, popularly known as “Korope,” lost his life in a fatal accident near the Lagos State Secretariat, inward Otedola Bridge, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday morning.
It was gathered that the incident occurred due to brake failure caused by excessive speeding, involved the mini bus colliding with a moving long truck.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident.
Taofik said the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) deeply regrets to report a tragic road accident that transpired earlier this morning near the Secretariat inward Otedola Bridge.
The statement read, “The severe impact left the driver of the mini bus trapped within the wreckage. However, the swift and coordinated intervention of LASTMA Officers ensured the immediate rescue of other passengers, all of whom emerged unscathed.”
He noted that in a collaborative effort, LASTMA Officers, alongside LASAMBUS personnel and FRSC officials, worked relentlessly to extricate the trapped driver.
“Regrettably, despite their commendable efforts, the driver was recovered lifeless. His remains were subsequently handed over to FRSC personnel by LASTMA Officers.
“Security operatives from the Alausa Police Division were present to provide protection throughout the duration of the rescue operations.”
While addressing the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, underscored the paramount importance of adhering to traffic regulations, particularly in maintaining safe speeds and ensuring proper vehicle maintenance.
“This heartbreaking incident serves as a profound reminder of the dire consequences of reckless driving. We implore all road users to prioritize safety and exercise utmost caution while on the road,” he stated.
“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority extends its deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased and reiterates its unwavering dedication to promoting safer roads and preventing avoidable tragedies,” he said.
