Nigerian students, NANS threatens nationwide protest over appointment of Eric Chelle as Super Eagles coach

SAHARA REPORTERS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has demanded the immediate reversal of Eric Sekou Chelle’s appointment as the head coach of the Super Eagles by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

NANS staged a protest at the Moshood Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Thursday, describing the decision as a disservice to Nigerian football.

“We are gathered here today to address an issue that has not only baffled us but has also drawn widespread disapproval from Nigerian students and sports enthusiasts alike,” said Abdul-Yekinn Odunayo, Clerk of the Senate, NANS National Headquarters.

“On behalf of the National Association of Nigerian Students, I, Abdul-Yekinn Odunayo, Clerk of the Senate of NANS National Headquarters, wish to categorically express our displeasure over the appointment of Eric Sekou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles,” Odunayo continued.

“This appointment, as announced by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is not only unacceptable but also a slap in the face of our nation’s abundant pool of local coaching talent.

“Consequently, NANS, as the voice of the Nigerian students, is compelled to organise a national protest to demand a reversal of this decision.”

The students also threatened a nationwide protest, demanding the appointment of a more tactical coach capable of maximising the country’s abundant talents.

Chelle’s appointment was confirmed on Tuesday, with the NFF tasking him with leading the Super Eagles to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.

Chelle, who previously managed Mali and other clubs, was dismissed from his role with Mali in June 2024.
