Erling Haaland has signed a mindboggling nine-year contract at Manchester City in one of the largest deals in football history.

By committing to the best years of his career, Haaland will see an uplift in his £400,000-a-week wages and two release clauses in the Norwegian’s previous deal have not been re-inserted.

In seismic developments for the Premier League champions, the 24-year-old insisted that he wants to create a legacy at the Etihad Stadium.

‘I’m super happy, proud,’ Haaland said. ‘I’m looking forward to staying here for a long time. Now I can fully focus on getting better because I am going to stay here for such a long time. Full focus on performing and getting better to give all of the fans what they want.

‘In the end, speaking with the people I spoke with, the hunger and the support that I have been getting for the last couple of years from the board, from the bosses and from Pep (Guardiola), it was an easy decision. I am delighted.’

It’s believed that his career plan had involved moving to La Liga – with Real Madrid long-term admirers – and Haaland is understood to have reiterated that idea to friends over the last two years.

But a new contract covering 10 seasons, potentially taking him to the age of 34, is a significant change in direction and sign of intent. City opened negotiations with the striker’s team last season.
