Current law will require the incoming president to implement a ban on the popular social media app
US President-elect Donald Trump has said that he will make a decision on whether to enforce a ban on TikTok “in the not too distant future,” after the Supreme Court upheld a law blocking the app if its Chinese parent company does not sell to an American firm by Sunday.
In a decision announced on Friday, the court’s nine justices all agreed that Congress did not violate the US Constitution’s protection of free speech when it ordered the sale of the app last year.
“There is no doubt that, for more than 170 million Americans, TikTok offers a distinctive and expansive outlet for expression, means of engagement and source of community. But Congress has determined that divestiture is necessary to address its well-supported national security concerns regarding TikTok’s data collection practices and relationship with a foreign adversary,” the court…
