Tanker inferno: 86 bodies recovered, buried after Niger explosion

VANGUARD

A catastrophic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State, has claimed the lives of 86 people, confirmed Abdullahi Baba Arah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).

In a statement released on Sunday, Arah revealed that 80 victims were buried in a mass grave at the Dikko Primary Health Care premises, while five bodies were claimed by relatives for private burial. One additional victim died from injuries sustained at the healthcare center.

The explosion occurred when a fuel tanker, en route from Kaduna to Gwagwalada, overturned at the junction and spilled its contents. Despite warnings urging residents to maintain a safe distance, many gathered at the scene to scoop fuel, leading to the deadly explosion. The blast resulted in extensive loss of life, severe injuries, and significant property damage.

A mass burial was organized by NSEMA, in collaboration with Gurara local government officials and community volunteers. The burial ceremony, which started at 5 p.m., continued until midnight. Arah confirmed that 55 individuals sustained injuries in the explosion and are currently receiving treatment.
