Tragedy struck on Sunday morning as gunmen stormed the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC), Eagle Parish, in Idiroko, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, killing a 54-year-old prophet, Yomi Adetula.
The assailants, numbering three, attacked the church located along Baggage Road, Odo Eran, Idiroko, at about 10:30 am during a service. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen appeared to target Prophet Adetula, opening fire on him before using an axe to mutilate his head.
Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, said officers arrived at the scene to find the prophet’s lifeless body in a pool of blood, his white celestial garment soaked in red.
“On careful observation, his body was riddled with bullets, and his head was not spared. To ensure the victim was dead, it was mangled with an axe,” Odutola said in a statement.
The police spokesperson revealed that the attackers entered the church with a long double-barrel gun, aimed at the prophet, and fired the fatal shot before fleeing towards the border area.
The prophet’s body has since been deposited at the General Hospital Morgue in Ilaro, while the police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
“Normalcy has been restored, and the command is working to gather possible clues to apprehend the perpetrators. Investigations are ongoing,” Odutola added.
