The United States would be compelled to purchase oil from geopolitical rivals like Venezuela if it disrupted trade with Canada, Ottawa’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly has cautioned.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Joly warned that President Biden’s proposal to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports could harm “real people” and strain relations between the two nations. She emphasized that Canada supplies oil at a discount, which is then refined in Texas, and without Canadian crude, the U.S. would have to turn to Venezuela.
“There’s no other option on the table, and this administration doesn’t want to work with Venezuela,” Joly stated.
