The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced the relocation of its 2025 Annual General Conference (AGC) from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Enugu, citing serious concerns over what it described as unconstitutional governance and a breakdown of democratic order in Rivers.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has moved its 2025 Annual General Conference (AGC) from Port Harcourt to Enugu, citing unconstitutional governance in Rivers State. The decision follows the federal government’s imposition of a Sole Administrator, a retired military officer, whose “command-style” rule has undermined democratic institutions.
The NBA, in a statement signed by its leadership, condemned the Sole Administrator’s actions as a “clear departure from constitutional norms,” stating he governs “as though the state is under military rule.” The association emphasized that hosting the event in Rivers would tacitly endorse “constitutional violations.”
After consultations with Rivers branch chairmen and an emergency NEC meeting, the NBA unanimously resolved to relocate, calling the National Assembly’s ratification of the administrator’s appointment a “grave constitutional subversion.” The body reaffirmed its commitment to upholding democracy and the rule of law.
