The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested a Nigerian national, Mercy Ojedeji, 24, for orchestrating a complex fraud scheme involving forged academic documents, romance scams, and immigration violations that prosecutors say aimed to defraud victims of over $1 million.
The FBI has arrested 24-year-old Nigerian national Mercy Ojedeji for allegedly masterminding a 49,000 in waived tuition and stipends before being expelled for academic misconduct. “Mr. Ojedeji built a false academic profile to deceive a respected institution,” stated the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Investigators uncovered 193 suspicious packages sent to his girlfriend’s address, linked to romance scam proceeds. Ojedeji pleaded guilty to wire fraud and immigration document forgery in a St. Louis federal court, facing potential years in prison for the multi-layered scheme.
