Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has criticized the Nigeria Police over the reported teargassing of peaceful protesters in Ahoada East amid ongoing political unrest. The protest, involving women from Elleye and Engine communities, opposed President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers and the appointment of a sole administrator.

In contrast, a pro-emergency rally in Port Harcourt by the ‘Rivers Women for Peace and Good Governance’ proceeded peacefully under heavy security.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of distress as tear gas was deployed against the Ahoada demonstrators.

“We are here to tell President Bola Tinubu that since he declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, it has not been easy,” one protester stated.

Fubara’s media aide, Jerry Omatsogunwa, condemned the police’s actions: “The police teargassed them to the extent that one of them, an old woman, fainted.”

He also accused certain officials of political ambition, stating, “The whole world should keep an eye on the state Commissioner of Police and the sole administrator.”
