A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday nullified the Senate’s suspension, calling it “excessive, unconstitutional” and a violation of her constituents’ rights.
The Senate is preparing for a tense confrontation today as suspended Kogi Central lawmaker Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan insists she will attend plenary despite her six-month suspension.
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday nullified the Senate’s suspension, calling it “excessive, unconstitutional” and a violation of her constituents’ rights.
“I thank you for your support. I am glad we are victorious today. We shall resume in the Senate on Tuesday by the grace of God,” Akpoti-Uduaghan said in a video message to supporters.
But the Senate leadership has said it will take no official action until it reviews the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgment.
“Pending receipt and examination of the CTC, and acting on the advice of counsel, the Senate shall refrain from taking any steps that may prejudice its legal position,” said Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu.
The lawmaker still faces a N5m contempt fine and has been ordered to publish a public apology for breaching a court injunction.
