Atiku sparks outrage after turning Buhari’s funeral into political rally

The funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died at 82 in London, United Kingdom, after a prolonged illness, was marred by political theatrics. Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s presence, instead of reflecting solemn respect, took on the tone of a calculated political move.

Eyewitnesses reported that supporters, who were mobilised and paid by Atiku, disrupted the ceremony with chants, shifting the mood from mourning to a campaign-like fanfare. What should have been a dignified national farewell was reduced to a platform for self-promotion.

The deliberate orchestration of political optics at such a sacred moment was not only tone-deaf but offensive to the millions of Nigerians who revered Buhari’s legacy. Rather than join the nation in a collective moment of reflection and unity, Atiku chose to inject partisan energy into a setting meant for solemnity and reverence.

This is not the first time Atiku has blurred the line between politics and propriety. His recurring pattern of inserting himself into sensitive national moments for perceived electoral advantage raises serious questions about judgment and leadership ethos. There is a time for politics and a time to pause, respect, and reflect. Buhari’s funeral was the latter.

Leadership, especially at the highest level, is as much about knowing when to act as it is about knowing when to step back. Nigerians deserve better than calculated insensitivity. The nation must be wary of those who view tragedy not as a time to mourn, but as an opportunity to capitalize on the trend.
