The Federal Government has approved the National Industrial Relations Policy (NIRP) 2025 to address frequent strikes by trade unions. The announcement followed a Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
Information Minister Mohammed Idris said the policy would “regulate the conduct of various trade unions” and align Nigeria’s labour practices with international standards. “This is due to frequent industrial actions over the years caused by the lack of a comprehensive national policy,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the recent circular that sparked a strike by health workers has been withdrawn. Coordinating Health Minister Prof. Alli Pate said negotiations are ongoing with the Nigerian Medical Association and nurses’ unions. “We’re now in the process of negotiating revised allowances transparently,” he said.
The nurses’ union insisted the strike will continue until key demands are met. “We must see commitment… before we can suspend the strike,” said NANNM-FHI Chairman Morakinyo-Olajide Rilwan.
Labour leaders also condemned government interference in union affairs, urging unity between NLC and TUC.
