A police officer in Akwa Ibom has rejected a bribe of ₦800,000 offered to release an armed robbery suspect and cover up the crime, according to the state police command.
The officer, CSP Ebong Thompson of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit, turned down the bribe on July 30, 2025.
“A police officer in charge of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit, CSP Ebong Thompson, rejected ₦800,000 bribe offered to him,” the command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, stated.
David Samuel Isaac, 53, was arrested after a Samsung phone snatched at gunpoint was traced to him. John said Isaac was previously arrested for similar crimes but returned to criminal activities after his release.
Another suspect, Emmanuel Mendie Peter, was taken into custody after bringing the bribe to the SWAT office.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, issued a commendation to the officers involved and warned the public against attempting to compromise investigations.
