“…I’m Nigerian through ancestry, by birth despite not being born there because of my parents, but by identity I’m not really.”
UK Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, says she no longer identifies as Nigerian, despite her ancestral roots.
Speaking on the Rosebud podcast, Badenoch stated, “I have not renewed my Nigerian passport, I think, not since the early 2000s… I’ve never quite felt that I belonged there.”
Badenoch, 45, who was born in Wimbledon, London, said most of her life has been in the UK. “I don’t identify with it (Nigeria) anymore… I’m Nigerian through ancestry, by birth despite not being born there because of my parents, but by identity I’m not really.”
She emphasized her connection to the UK: “Home is where my now family is… it’s my husband, my children, my brother and his children… The Conservative Party is very much part of my family.”
Badenoch revealed she returned to the UK because her parents believed Nigeria had no future for her. She has previously criticized Nigeria’s government and corruption, and in January, warned against UK immigration policies turning the country into “a poor country where a terrible government destroys lives.”
