A Brazilian futsal goalkeeper, Antonio Edson dos Santos Sousa, collapsed and died after saving a penalty during an amateur tournament in Para.

A futsal match in Para, northern Brazil, ended in tragedy when goalkeeper Antonio Edson dos Santos Sousa collapsed and died seconds after saving a penalty with his chest.

The 34-year-old, popularly known as “Pixe,” was filmed celebrating the save during an amateur tournament in Augusto Correa before suddenly stumbling into a teammate’s arms and falling to the ground. Despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at hospital.

The match was part of independence week commemorations. Following the incident, town hall officials suspended scheduled games.

In a tribute, the Para Futsal Federation said: “It is with great sadness that we received the news of the passing of Antonio Edson dos Santos Sousa… His presence will always be remembered on and off the court.”

It is unclear if the chest impact contributed to his death. The tragedy comes months after another Brazilian futsal player, Roberto Peterson, 33, died of cardiac arrest after being struck by the ball.
